Machine Learning saved a life
One night, 𝐒𝐜𝐨𝐭𝐭 𝐊𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧 got an emergency call around 1 am with an alert from a third-party HeartWatch app, which informed him that his resting heart rate was very high (>120 Beats Per Minute) in comparison to the average of 49 Beats Per Minute. He ran quickly to the hospital to check this up.
His Smartwatch of Apple had an electrocardiogram (ECG) sensor, monitoring the heart rate and the rhythm in which the heart is beating. When doctors compared the reading with their high-tech machines in the hospital, it was "dead accurate."
Then the hospital officials took a blood test and discovered an elevated enzyme that signals a heart attack has occurred or is occurring.
Apple smartwatch used advanced ML techniques to categorize Scott's case as critical and informed him as soon as possible, which saved his life. We can debate this technology's privacy concern, but we all will agree that life always comes first.
